The Fat on Avocados

With its alligator like exterior and its creamy buttery center, its no wonder people are perplexed by this nutrient intense fruit.

The Avocado isn't by any means fat free, but to understand why the avocado is considered to be "healthy fat" and an asset to your daily diet you would need to understand what fat is. Fat is broken into four groups; saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and the dreaded trans fat. Avocados are the only fruit that contains monounsaturated fats, known as the heart healthy fat. Studies have shown that monounsaturated fat can lower LDL cholesterol and boost HDL cholesterol levels, which in turn helps in preventing heart disease and cancer. They are also great for snacking on after a hard workout. According to a study done at the University of Wisconsin, monounsaturated fats are more efficiently used as energy following a workout as the fat is more easily burned. The high fat content found in the fruit gives a faster feeling of satiated "fullness" preventing overeating as well as increasing the absorption of other nutrients. Monounsaturated fat along with some of the powerful antioxidants found in the fruit can also moisturize, replenish and repair damaged skin. Avocados offer more than just heart healthy fat they contain an array of vitamins, minerals and phyto-nutrients that are essential to a healthy lifestyle.
