How Avocados Can Benefit Your Hair

Avocados contain many essential nutrients, proteins, vitamins A, D, E and K, B vitamins, magnesium, copper, iron, folic acid, potassium and amino acids.  These ingredients help to repair and replenish dry and damaged hair. 

The proteins, vitamins B and E found in avocados can also increase the strength and elasticity of hair, giving it a healthy shine and texture.  Below you will find a variety of recipes for making your very own hair conditioners using avocados.

Avocado & Coconut Milk Hair Conditioner

Coconut milk is used in many hair and skin care products to hydrate, moisturize, repair and heal the hair.

Ingredients:

  • 1 avocado mashed
  • ½ cup coconut milk

Step 1:  Combine mashed avocado with some coconut milk.

Step 2:  Comb it through the hair and let sit for 10 -15 minutes.

Step 3:  Rinse hair with warm water followed by cool water.

Fruit-tastic Hair Conditioning Mask

Ingredients:

  • ½ banana
  • ½ avocado
  • ¼ cantaloupe
  • 1 tablespoon wheat germ oil
  • 1 tablespoon plain yogurt
  • 1 vitamin E capsule

Step 1:  Using a potato masher or your hands, combine all ingredients except vitamin E capsule into a bowl. 

Step 2:  Break open vitamin E capsule and add it to fruit mixture.

Step 3:  Shampoo hair as usual, towel dry. Apply fruit mixture and leave in hair for 15 minutes.

Step 4:  Rinse well.

Dry Hair Avocado Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of mayonnaise
  • 1 ripe pitted avocado
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 10 drops of rosemary essential oil

Step 1:  Mash avocado, add mayonnaise and honey and blend together.

Step 2:  Add rosemary essential oil and stir.

Step 3:  Massage into hair and scalp. Cover your head with a shower cap and let sit for 25 minutes.

Step 4:  Rinse hair with warm water followed by cool water.

Avocado “Hot Oil” Treatment

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of real mayonnaise
  • 1 ripe avocado

Step 1:  Put the avocado bowl and mash with a fork. 

Step 2:  Add mayonnaise to mashed avocado and mix together thoroughly.  Smooth into your hair and cover with a plastic shower cap.

Step 3:  Either sit in a hot tub for 20 minutes or stand in a hot shower making sure to keep your head out of the water.  This will allow the steam to penetrate your hair. 

Step 4:  After 20 minutes or so, shampoo your hair as normal.
